Meet “Merilda,”
the sourdough starter who started it all.
Welcome to Baked by Bjørnie, a local Riverside neighborhood “cottage foods” microbakery specializing in authentic sourdough and freshly milled whole-grain baking in Baltimore City. Every loaf begins with our living sourdough starter, nurtured daily, and slow-fermented for deep flavor, easy digestion, and lasting freshness.
Our small-batch creations include REAL naturally leavened sourdough bread, fresh-milled crackers, shiny sourdough bagels, and whole-grain cookies.
All of our breads and baked goods are made by hand, and our fresh-milled baked goods are all made from organic wheat berries ground right here in our kitchen. Nothing extra, just simple ingredients transformed with care, patience, and craft.
You can find our loaves at La Cosette Pastry Shop on Fridays and weekends or place an order on Hotplate for Porch Pick Up! Occasionally, we are also at the Baltimore Museum of Industry Farmer’s Market.
Fall/Winter 2025 Porch Pick Up: Wednesdays and Saturdays

Hi, I’m Maria — the baker behind Baked by Bjørnie, a microbakery rooted in Baltimore’s Riverside neighborhood.
We’ve called Baltimore home since 2021. What started as a bit of curiosity, combined with a desire to put my biochemistry degree to use in my kitchen, and a hint of intimidation about sourdough, quickly turned into a full-blown passion.
One day, I made a loaf of sourdough bread, and I just never stopped.
I used to be scared of working with dough, but once I got my hands in it, I realized how grounding and rewarding the process could be.
As our family grew, so did my desire to make better food choices, especially for our toddler. That’s what led me to start milling my own organic grains, baking with simple ingredients, and creating bread that I actually felt good about sharing with others.
